SCRIPPS RANCH – A big 10-run explosion late in the game along with early offensive fireworks propels Steele Canyon (1-0) to a convincing 17-2 victory over Scripps Ranch (0-1) on Thursday (Mar. 25) afternoon.
For the Cougars, JAZMIN WILLIAMS (4-5, 3R, 4 RBI, 2 2B), TAYLER THOMAS (3-3, R, RBI), CARLIE WILLIAMS (3-4, 2R, 4 RBI, 2B, 3B) and MARIAH MATA (2-3, 2R, 2 RBI, 3B) all had multiple hits on the day.
Williams who led off the game with a double would score the first run of the game when a ball hit to left field was misplayed by the Falcons.
Leading 1-0 in the top of the second inning Williams would do more damage as she drove in both KASSANDRA JAGGARD (2 R) and Mata with a base hit to left field to extend the lead 3-0.
Steele Canyon pushed across another run on a sacrifice fly by Thomas that brought home MARLEY RIMOLDI (RUN) to make it 4-0.
Not only were the bats on fire but also the pitching for the Cougars as EMMA SHELLSTROM (RUN) struck out the side in the bottom of the second but also retired the side in the bottom of
the third inning.
The only blemish on the day for Shellstrom in the circle was a one-out home run by REILLY ERICKSON in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 4-1.
Despite the run scored by the Falcons the Cougars just shrugged it off as they scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Starting off the attack was BREANNA LAKIN (1-3, 2B) with one out as she roped a double to center field, ALLYSON HAESSLY (1-2, R, RBI) came into pinch run, she would come around to score on a base hit by Williams. Williams would come all the way around and score when Mata followed with a triple to right field. The next batter ISABELLA SMITH (RBI) would drive in Mata on a sacrifice fly.
Leading off in the top of the sixth inning Williams would spark offensive fireworks as she crushed the offering over the left-field fence for the solo-homerun. Steele Canyon would only add more from there as Thomas and JANEA WILSON (1-5, 2R) hit back-to-back base hits which was followed by a walk to KAMEA SEUNANNE (1-2, R, RBI) to load the bases.
Only one out and the bases packed, Carlie Williams looked to add more to the damage and indeed she did. On a 1-0 pitch, she hit the next offering to right field for a bases-clearing triple
extending the lead to 11-1. Later in the inning, Jazmin Williams doubled in Shellstrom and advanced ZITLALLY RODRIGUEZ (RUN) to third base. Another run came courtesy of an error by
the Falcons.
Steele Canyon would round out their scoring in the top of the sixth inning thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Seunanne and Haessly.
After it was all said and done heading into the bottom of the sixth inning the Cougars led 17-1. Scripps Ranch would add another run which made it 17-2 but Shellstrom would get the final out
to end the game.
For the Falcons it was a rough day in the circle for MADELYN CARNIGLIA who gave up 7 runs over her 4 1/3 innings of work on 9 hits, she also struck out 6 and walked 4. In a relief appearance for the Falcons, DEVON CASTILLO in her 1 2/3 innings of work gave up 10 runs on 7 hits.
On the other side for the Cougars, Shellstrom picked up the win as she tossed 5 innings of 2 hits ball in which she gave up 1 run while fanning 5 on the day, in relief Seunanne worked an inning
in which she gave up 1 run on 2 hits.
