SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
ECS staff report
EL CAJON – In order for the San Diego Christian College women’s volleyball team to be the best, they need to defeat the best. But that time will, for now, need to wait.
Facing No. 4-ranked Westmont College in the schools’ Golden State Athletic Conference showdowns, the Hawks took the first set in overtime on Tuesday’s (Feb. 23) opener, eventually building a 2-0 lead.
However, the experienced and undefeated Warriors barely rallied to take a 27-29, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-9 nail-biter at Salvation Army gymnasium.
Two nights later (Feb. 25), Westmont, the defending NAIA national runner-ups, also dropped the first set but bulled back to win, 21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-19.
Isabella Marshall paced San Diego Christian with a season-high 22 kills, Jessica Pinasco added 12 kills, while the defense again reached triple-figures with 102 digs.
However, Westmont had a trio of “go-to” spikers compared to just two for the Hawks. Patty Kerman led the Warriors with 17 kills. Five players registered at least eight kills each.
In the second match, the decisive third set saw the Warriors held the last 2-point lead at 17-15, but the Hawks fought back for a 23-22 advantage, However, Westmont took four of the final five points, two on kills by Phoebe Minch, then a clinching service ace by Sydney Dunn,
San Diego Christian (5-5 overall, 2-2 GSAC) will host La Sierra in non-conference play on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 7:30 p.m. Westmont is now 7-0 (4-0 GSAC).
