2021 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
ECS staff report
EL CAJON – Following a solid showing last week, the San Diego Christian College women’s volleyball team thought now was the time to snap a long losing streak to The Master’s University, arguably, the oldest and most heated rival of the Hawks.
However, someone forgot to tell the visiting Mustangs.
Despite jumping out to a quick start, San Diego Christian dropped the ensuing three sets in falling to The Master’s in four, which won by scores of 20-25, 25-15, 25-15, 35-20, for the school’s 13th consecutive win in the head-to-head series.
Strong attacking play by Isabella Marshall and Alexis DeBina-Bautista — both freshmen — allowed the Hawks (3-3 overall) to grab the first set. However, TMU took advantage of a series of hitting errors to take command.
Marshall led the Hawks with 12 kills, Bautista added 10 putaways, while senior Kayli Barrera paced the defense with 21 digs.
Should the Hawks continuing their alternating style — all season long, they’ve won one match, then lost one match, etc. — they should have no problem in their next match.
After matches to close the week against La Sierra University have been canceled due to the pandemic which has hit hard on the Golden Eagles program, San Diego Christian will instead launch into the Golden State Athletic Conference schedule against Hope International University of Fullerton. The match will be conducted at the Salvation Army Gymnasium in El Cajon on Tue., Feb. 16, starting at 6:30 p.m
