LA MESA — Helix named former El Capitan coach and athletic director Jason Cavazos as its head boys basketball coach, it was announced by the school on Wednesday.
Cavazos spent eight seasons with El Capitan, coaching boys and girls teams there in different spans, then served as director of athletics for six years until his recent resignation from the post.
Cavazos, an El Cap grad, guided the Vaquero boys to a section championship game appearance in 2015. He also guided the boys’ volleyball program to an undefeated league season in 2016.
For Cavazos, 43, it’s hopefully back to daily practices, workouts, and a prep travel schedule as he returns to the bench, replacing legendary head coach John Singer, whose coaching career spanned five calendar decades.
Singer posted 741 victories. Before that, Singer was a reserve forward on the Highlanders’ varsity, thus totaling a true half-century wearing Green and Gray.
Singer tried to previously bow from the bench a season earlier but returned following the sudden illness of his initial replacement Brennan Cassady, who has since recovered bravely from brain surgery.
Meanwhile, calls have been made to rename Helix’s recently-refurbished Caledonian Gymnasium in Singer’s honor (Singer Center and Singer Gymnasium are the most-referred choices). Singer recently said he has an old slab of the gym’s previous floor and was looking to find a way to display it.
