2020 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS MEN’S BASKETBALL
From staff and wire reports
SAN MARCOS —- The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team seems vastly improved from a season ago, but they missed an opportunity to clear a major hurdle in Thursday’s non-conference contest.
The Hawks allowed a 5-point lead to slip away in the final 47 seconds of regulation time, eventually falling to NAIA 25th-ranked University of Antelope Valley, 96-91 in overtime, at the Edenpark Center.
The Pioneers’ Derrick Green hit a putback shot from the paint with one second remaining to force an 84-all deadlock. Then in the extra session, UAV guard Dominque Exander tallied a number of his game-high 26 points.
The ballclubs were even at 84 with three minutes left, then Exander nailed a 3-point shot to trigger an 8-3 run to cement the triumph.
For San Diego Christian (0-2 overall), guard Greg Chew posted an outstanding shooting night. The senior sank 9-of-13 shots from the floor, plus 8-of-9 from the foul line to share scoring honors with 26 points.
Chew, who led Woodland Hills-Taft to the CIF California State basketball playoffs as a senior, also completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Palomar College transfer JaMario Harris was next with 14 points for SDCC, followed by Riley Blea (11) and Cameron Dashiell (10). All three are guards.
Both sides shot near-identical totals — SDCC shot 31-of-62 from the floor; UVA was 31-of-61 — including seven 3-point goals each. However, the Hawks were in foul trouble all night, as two players eventually fouled out, allowing the Pioneers to tally 27-of-36 decisive foul shots to win.
San Diego Christian is off for the Thanksgiving holiday, returning to action on Wed., Dec. 2. They return to the same court but will be the visiting team against the University of Saint Katherine, starting at 8:30 p.m.
