MISSION BAY – The Grossmont girls varsity soccer team won their second CIF championship in-a-row, defeating Granite Hills, 1-0, to capture the San Diego CIF Division I championship on Saturday night at Mission Bay High.
Junior Karlee Kennedy scored the game’s only goal seven minutes into the second half on an assist from freshman Bridgette Wilson.
It was just Kennedy’s second goal of the season and Wilson’s first assists.
The second-seeded Foothillers (14-4-6) will travel to face Oak Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern California Division II Regional playoffs on Tuesday at 4.
Top-seeded Granite Hills won the first regular-season meeting, 3-1, but the teams played to a 2-all draw in the second round.
Grossmont finished seventh in the final local media poll, while the Eagles were listed eighth.
Grossmont goalie Natalie Emery made a save on a penalty kick in the first half.
Emery, a sophomore, made eight saves in the contest.
The Foothillers won the Division II championship last year.
Granite Hills (14-6-4) won the Grossmont Hills League championship.
