Top teams compete at Coaches vs. Cancer

CHULA VISTA – The Coaches vs. Cancer event at Bonita Vista High even drew some of the top teams in San Diego County on Saturday, including a quartet of teams from the East County.
EL CAPITAN 48, MONTGOMERY 46 – The Lady Vaqueros defeated the Aztecs on Saturday at the Coaches vs. Cancer event.
Mackenzie Curtis scored 29 points, converting 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, to lead El Capitan.
Emma Driskill added seven points for the Vaqueros.
Shiana Peres played a standout game for the Vaqueros.
Curtis had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter as El Capitan built a short 46-36 lead, then held on.
El Capitan led 24-23 at halftime, then outscored the Aztecs 16-8 in the third quarter.
Tiffany Bickford had a three-pointer for the Vaqueros in the third quarter.
SAN MARCOS 48, GROSSMONT 35 – The Knights, who are ranked 10th in the county, defeated the Foothillers with a 27-18 edge in the second half.
Shyann VanKirk had 12 points for Grossmont. She helped the Foothillers get off to a positive start, scoring Grossmont’s first six points of the game, as the Hillers led 7-2 early.
Sarah Henry added seven points for the Foothillers, including a three-pointer in the second quarter.
Anyssa Chargualaf finished with five points for GHS.
Grossmont trailed 21-17 at halftime.
Grossmont’s Jaylyn Johnson had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Grossmont’s next game is on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at Mount Miguel.
BISHOP’S 74, MOUNT MIGUEL 41 – Sixth-ranked Bishop’s routed the ninth-ranked Matadors just one night after the Matadors took the lead in the Grossmont Hills League race with a big win.
Jennifer Moreno scored 16 points for Mount Miguel. She had a three-pointer in the third quarter.
Ixchel Rojo contributed 12 points for MMHS.
Jacquee Brown added seven points for the Matadors, while teammate Zanna Hurst finished with six points, including a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Brown and Moreno both hit three-pointers in the second quarter for the Matadors. Moreno also had a trey in the first period.
MATER DEI CATHOLIC 57, HELIX 41 – Eighth-ranked Mater Dei Catholic defeated the Highlanders on Saturday.
