EastCountySports.com staff report
LA MESA — Helix could literally not stop Sierra Canyon in a Division 1-AA Southern California Regional playoff game at Benton Hart Stadium on Friday night.
The Trailblazers scored practically on every drive in a 38-20 win, ending the Highlanders’ terrific season, which included a San Diego CIF Open Division championship.
Sierra Canyon moves on to the state division title game to face Fresno Central – 38-32 winners over Oak Ridge, of El Dorado Hills, next Friday at Cerritos College.
Sierra Canyon quarterback Chayden Peery went 16 for 18 for 215 yards and one touchdown. Sierra Canyon also rushed for 177 yards.
Sierra Canyon broke the ice with a first-quarter touchdown but Scottie sophomore Christian Washington had a 20-yard touchdown run with seven minutes to go in the first half to tie the game.
Helix senior quarterback Kamryn Brown threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Keionte Scott with 20 seconds left before halftime to tie the game, as the score was tied at intermission, 14-all.
In the third quarter, Jason Jones scored on a 19-yard run to put the Trailblazers up by six following a blocked extra-point.
Helix couldn’t achieve a first down after halftime, but the Scotties scored in the fourth quarter on an 84-yard kickoff return by sophomore Christian Washington.
Sierra Canyon’s defense was dominant in the second half, holding Helix without a first down. The Scotties’ only second-half touchdown came on an 84-yard Christian Washington kickoff return.
