LA COSTA CANYON 25, GRANITE HILLS 16
EastCountySports.com staff report
CARLSBAD – The Granite Hills Eagles were the only local team to travel out of the East County for the opening round of the San Diego CIF playoffs but the road to victory proved to be elusive in a 25-16 loss in a Division I contest at La Costa Canyon on Friday night.
Granite Hills, the No. 11 seed, finished the season with a 5-6 record.
After a scoreless first quarter, Eagle junior Austin Smith recorded an interception early in the second quarter.
The Mavericks, however, also recorded an interception, which was followed by a 5-yard touchdown run for an 8-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Mavericks converted a turnover and scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 15-0 lead, which would be extended to 18-0 n the third quarter.
The Mavs had another interception in the fourth quarter, which led to a 75-yard touchdown run to put LCC ahead 25-0.
Later in the fourth, Granite Hills junior quarterback Justus McComb had a 7-yard keeper for a touchdown, pulling back a ball, and taking off up the middle behind juniors Dimitri Fuente and Stanley Earley, and sophomore Tanner Vielguth.
McComb also ran in the two-point conversion, making it a three-score game.
McComb then passed to James Johnson for a miraculous 52-yard touchdown, in which Johnson somehow escaped a gang-tackle, leaving Mavs crashing into one another.
The score was followed by a two-point conversion from McComb to freshman Jaylen Hall to draw to within nine.
McComb had 389 yards of total offense in the contest.
