EL CAJON – The Monte Vista Monarchs tuned up for next week’s season finale with a 35-0 win over the host El Cajon Valley Braves at Priest Field on Friday night.
The Monarchs can win the Grossmont Valley League championship with a win at West Hills.
Monte Vista improved to 5-4 (3-0 GVL) on the season.
The Monarchs currently hold a one-game lead over the Wolf Pack and Santana. Should the Pack defeat Monte Vista, then the three teams would share the league title, providing the Sultans defeat the Braves.
After a scoreless first quarter, five different Monarchs scored in the victory over the Braves.
Ruben Silva had a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter thanks to the blocking of junior tight end Victor Meza.
Then, on a second-and-8 play at the ECV 29, junior lineman Aaron Bustos opened the way for Isaiah Gardner to run straight up the gut and into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
El Cajon Valley kicked off to start the second half, but senior Fredrerico Villanueva Jr. returned it 85 yards for a touchdown
In the fourth quarter, Xavier Leyva had a 44-yard touchdown run with help from blockers Jesse Schroeder and Jared Reinholdt
Damarius Hyde rushed for 128 yards for El Cajon Valley (3-6, 0-3 GVL)
