Owen throws six TD passes in Jags’ win

VICTORVILLE – Southwestern College junior quarterback Josh Owen passed for six touchdowns – including four in the second quarter – as the Jaguars beat Victor Valley, 41-17, in the Rams’ home opener here on Saturday night.

Owen, from Waco, Texas, passed for 354 yards on the night, going 15-of-30 with an interception, which was returned for a score in the third quarter to close a Southwestern lead to 34-17.

Southwestern sophomore wide receiver Tyshied Dixon and freshman wide receiver Davion Johnson both caught two scores for the Jags. Both of Dixon’s scoring catches came in the big second quarter.

Southwestern took a 6-0 lead on a touchdown reception by Clay Barganier from Owen early in the first quarter for a 4-yard score.

After a Rams field goal less than a minute into the second quarter, Owen connected with Tysheid Dixon for a 29-yard touchdown to give the Jaguars a 12-3 lead with 9:14 remaining before halftime.

Victor Valley fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Jags recovered.

The Jaguars then scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Owen to Johnson, giving Southwestern the lead, 18-3, with 8:17 left in the first half.

Dixon caught a pass wide open for a 77-yard touchdown and the Jags led 24-3 with 6:32 left in the first half.

The Rams got a big-play, 82-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 24-10 with 5:16 left in the first half.

Owen’s fourth touchdown of the quarter went to former Grossmont Griffin Matthew Linton for a 37-yard score, giving the Jags a 32-10 with 3:13 left in the first half.

The first score of the second half came when a Rams’ punt snap sailed into the end zone for a safety and a 34-10 advantage.

Owen was intercepted in the third quarter, which resulted in a long pick-six, cutting the lead to 34-17 with 8:15 left in the third quarter.

The Rams later had a drive into the red zone but a bad snap leads to a turnover and Southwestern took over at the 20.

Owen connected with  Johnson again for a 69-yard touchdown with 1:54 left in the third quarter for the final margin.

Dixon finished with five receptions for 165 yards, while Linton had four catches for 51 yards.

Southwestern’s Braelen Bettles had a pair of sacks, while Ubaldo Torres, Taurus Coleman, and Sekeli Manu added a sack each.

Riley Havird had an interception for the Jaguars.
