LA MESA – The Foothills Christian Knights defeated visiting Avalon, of Santa Catalina Island, 40-36, in a non-league 8-man football game at Seau Field on Friday night.
Tony Mroz, of the Knights, passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another. He had 273 yards of total offense – passing, rushing, and receiving (3 receptions).
Avalon led 22-12 after the first quarter but the Knights finished with 558 yards, including senior Kevin Helfers’ 226 total yards. Helfers rushed for two touchdowns.
Junior receiver Jason Oliviera had a 95-yard touchdown reception for the Knights, who improved to 4-0.
After trailing 28-20 at halftime, the Knights led 32-28 after three quarters.
Mroz led FCHS (2-1) with seven solo tackles.
Senior Tanner Corey had an interception for Foothills, while Joseph Thomas and Isacc Bartolome both forced fumbles.
The Knights open Ocean League play this week when they travel to face the Borrego Springs Rams, which defeated Horizon Prep, 47-24, last Friday.

PINE VALLEY – The Mission Bay Buccaneers handed the Mountain Empire RedHawks a 55-29 loss here on Friday night.
The RedHawks fell to 1-3.
The RedHawks took the lead 3-0 near the end of the first quarter following a long run by Jericho Brennan that set up the first score of the game.
Mountain Empire extended the lead to 10-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Khaliel Whitehead returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown.
After a Mission Bay touchdown, Whitehead threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 16-7 by halftime.
The Bucs returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to take the lead.
A pair of interceptions and a fumble in the third quarter allowed Mission Bay to take a 41-16 early in the fourth.
Whitehead added another a touchdown pass.
Mountain Empire will head to Coronado Island for next Friday night’s game against the Islanders.
