RedHawks shut out Army-Navy; Pats fall; Knights rock

PINE VALLEY – Mountain Empire High junior quarterback KHALIEL WHITEHEAD was 21-for-25 passing for 309 yards and also rushed three times for 91 yards for a 400-yard night, as the RedHawks shutout visiting Army-Navy Academy, 30-0, in a non-league game on Friday night.

Junior MARCUS SMITH had nine receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown for the RedHawks, who improved to 1-2.

Whitehead threw a 26-yard touchdown pass on a 4th-and 16 play for the first score of the game.

Whitehead had a 41-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it 22-0 following the point-after. Smith caught the short pass and sprinted across the field for the score.

Mountain Empire also had a 43-yard run.

MEHS had a fumble recovery in the second quarter with the score 15-0. That was the score at halftime.

Senior JERICHO BRENNAN had 18 total tackles for Mountain Empire, including 14 solo.

Place-kicker CAITLYN NOLAND booted a pair of PATs.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter.

Mountain Empire will host Mission Bay, another 1-2 club, next Friday here.

SOLDOTNA 42, CHRISTIAN 7

EL CAJON – Alaskan state division champ Soldotna High limited the Christian High Patriots to just one trip into the end zone, coming to the East County to take a 42-7 win back home on Friday night at Valley Stadium.

Nate Stine scored the Patriots’ touchdown in the second quarter, but Christian trailed, 20-7, at halftime.

The Starts’ Wyatt Medcoff rushed for three touchdowns and teammate Aaron Fateloi-Eli had two scores on the ground for the top-ranked visitors from Alaska.

Trailing, 7-0, the Patriots recovered a fumble in the second quarter

Patriot junior quarterback Gabe Kruge had an 11-yard run to the Soldotna 30 in the second quarter.

Trailing in the fourth quarter, 29-7, Christian Salacup was on the back end of a hook and ladder to complete a 29-yard pass play to the Soldotna 40.

Krug had a 15-yard pass to Stine in the fourth quarter on a delayed screen for a first down.

Krug added a 10-yard run in the fourth to pick up a first down on fourth-and-3.

Krug added a 12-yard run on a bootleg to get inside the 5, but the Pats couldn’t tack on a consolation score.

Krug passed for 120 yards.

Salacup had five catches for 64 yards, while senior Todd Beezer caught two passes for 40 yards for CHS.

Nate Stine finished with seven tackles, and brother Gabe Stine had five tackles.

Senior Jack Moyes had seven tackles for the Pats, while junior Van Nevling had four tackles and senior Elio Myers had  3 1/2 tackles for Christian High.

Soldotna had nearly 300 yards rushing on the night.

Christian (1-2) will meet Monte Vista next Friday in Spring Valley in a rematch of last year’s overtime game, which won by the Patriots.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 42, ROCK ACADEMY 6

LA MESA – The Knights’ TONY MROZ passed for 179 yards as Foothills Christian defeated visiting Rock Academy at Seau Field on Friday.

Foothills’ JASON OLIVIERA returned a kickoff for a touchdown forced a fumble, which he recovered in the end zone for another score.

The Knights will host Avalon High, of Catalina Island, next Friday at Seau Field at 7.
