VISTA – The Monte Vista Monarchs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break a 14-all tie and defeated host Rancho Buena Vista, 28-14, in a non-league contest on Friday night.
Monte Vista scored two touchdowns in the first half and led 14-6 at halftime.
Isaiah Gardner scored on runs of 66 and 2 yards, and quarterback Ruben Silva was on big-play alert with a 46-yard keeper for the Monarchs’ first score.
The third quarter was scoreless but Gardner’s 66-yarder came in the final stanza with seven minutes left in the game.
Monte Vista’s offensive line – including junior Adrian Ortzi, senior Jared Reinholdt, senior Ron Barry ad senior Angel Villanueva – helped pave the way for Gardner’s scores.
The Longhorns scored a touchdown in the second quarter.
RBV converted a fumble recovery late in the third quarter into the game-tying score early in the fourth on a touchdown pass. The ‘Horns ran in the conversion to tie the game just two minutes into the final period.
Monte Vista forced a fumble on Rancho Buena Vista’s next possession and recovered it at the RBV 30.
The Monarchs converted the short field into a touchdown on a 3-yard run with five minutes remaining in the game.
The Monte Vista defense stopped the Longhorns’ ensuing series and took over the ball with two minutes to play.
The Monarchs will travel to face Henry next Friday in Week 3 before a home rematch in Week 4 against the Christian Patriots, a game that went to overtime last season.
