HILLTOP 47, EL CAPITAN 41
EastCountySports.com staff report
LAKESIDE – In a matchup between El Capitan head coach RON BURNER and his son, Ron, the defensive coordinator at Hilltop High, neither coach may have come away feeling totally satisfied.
But the younger Burner will have the satisfaction of the victory following the Lancers’ 47-41 road upset win over the Vaqueros.
A 14-13 El Cap lead at halftime turned into a barn-Burner, so to speak, with the defenses getting lit up for 48 points in the third quarter.
The Lancers’ Jeremiah Serrano rushed for 254 yards and four touchdowns to help out-torch the defenses.
El Capitan senior WICK HAUSER passed for 280 yards and four touchdowns to provide his own fuel to the fire.
Hilltop led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter after Serrano’s first score.
Hauser threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to junior KALEN LAVALLAIS to put El Cap in the lead, 7-6.
Hilltop (2-0) re-took the lead behind Serrano, 13-7.
Lavallais then caught the second of his three touchdown receptions from Hauser, this time from 12 yards out, to give the hosts a 14-13 lead at the break.
Then, senior DONNY GREEN struck for the first score of the wild third on a 6-yard run for a 21-13 lead.
Hilltop got a 65-yard score from Serrano to close the gap back to 20-19.
The Vaqueros answered with 50-yard pass play from Hauser to Green. A conversion put El Cap up by nine.
Green finished the evening with 166 total yards.
The Lancers’ Abraham Avila had a 30-yard TD run to pull the Lancers back within two.
Hauser then hit Lavallais for a 66-yard score, giving the Vaqueros a 34-26 edge. The pair connected four times for 106 yards on the night.
Hilltop’s Javin Deanda had a 15-yard touchdown run, then a conversion tied the game.
Deanda connected with Marko Aki for a 94-yard scoring play to give the Lancers the lead by the end of the quarter.
Whew.
Hauser then led the Vaqueros on a game-tying drive in the third quarter with a long scramble followed by a short touchdown dive. Hauser had 45 yards rushing, including the 36-yarder.
Deanda broke the deadlock just a short time later with an 8-yard score, giving the Lancers a 47-41 advantage with still seven minutes and change to play.
El Capitan sophomore SAVIGON YOKLEY had a 48-yard reception from Hauser.
Junior TRENTON MARCH rushed 15 times for 64 yards, including a 38-yarder.
Another group that had success was the Vaquero offensive line, including senior center CARSON FEIL, senior tackle RYAN GREAVES, junior guard TIMMOTHY HUTSON, and senior guard DANIEL REED.
El Capitan will travel to face defending state division champ San Diego next Friday.
