SANTEE (6-26-2019) – Former San Diego Stars standout outfielder Anthony Williams is now directing his own summer baseball program, as his San Diego Rough Riders took on the Stars for the very first time in Tuesday’s (June 25) non-conference affair.
Say one thing for Williams, he learned his lessons from Stars owner/manager Mickey Deutschman. For example: once you determine who can beat you, don’t let that player beat you.
Williams needed two at-bats to determine Stars first baseman Tristan Salinas was the man to stop. However, by the time he figured it out, Salinas already topped his entire summer output of four RBI by driving in five, leading the Stars to a 10-3 triumph over the Rough Riders at West Hills High.
After lining out to the Rough Riders’ shortstop in the first inning, Salinas staked the Stars to a quick lead with a 3-run double to open the scoring in the third.
However, in the fifth, Williams had no choice but to pitch to the Santana High and Grossmont College product because the bases were loaded. Salinas prompted pumped his second double of the contest, unclearing the bases with a 3-run shot and a 5-1 advantage.
Williams wisely elected to walk Salinas over his next two at-bats, but the balance of the Stars lineup made sure he scored on each occasion to extend the lead. Both times, balls hit by catcher Luke Arias — first a grounder, then a fly ball — were booted, as if the baseball gods were waving a finger at Williams.
Entering the ballgame, Salinas drove in a single run on four occasions. This time, it took just five innings to completely overtake his previous total.
Meanwhile, it was another strong outing for Stars starting pitcher Bailey Roberson. In a declared four innings, the El Capitan High product struck out five batters with a walk, allowing just one run to run his summer ledger to 3-0 (4-0 if you count a forfeit by the Kearny Mesa Mustangs when Roberson fired three shutout frames).
Among the relievers, Tyler Luban and Trevor Elliott tossed one shutout inning.
Star-gazing
Jake Sergent also tossed one shutout inning. The most interesting outing was registered by Elliott, who just graduated from Mountain Empire High, as he faced six batters, finishing with three walks and a trio of strikeouts.
The Stars now hold a 13-1 overall record this summer.
