East County Sports staff report
CARMEL HEIGHTS (4-14-2019) – Grossmont High School has been determined to be a pool winner and will advance to Saturday’s (Apr. 20) championship round of the Falcon Fiesta.
Technically, the Foothillers still have one pool-play contest remaining, but by virtue of a head-to-head victory over pool runner-up Mission Hills, they still advance to the semifinals.
However, the Hillers’ Final Four match-up will not be easy, meeting Mater Dei Catholic, the preseason No. 1 ballclub in the CIF San Diego Section.
Grossmont’s game with the Lady Dons will be the second game of a tripleheader.
At 9 a.m., tournament host Torrey Pines (Pool A winner) will host Eastlake (Pool B winner). Grossmont-Mater Dei Catholic will follow at 11:15 a.m., with the victors meeting in the 1:30 p.m. final to determine the 21st champion of The Fiesta.
Meanwhile, the 16 remaining tournament entrants will also be playing Saturday, with most of these consolations contests being held at Westview, Escondido, Mission Hills and a fourth site to be determined (among the candidates are West Hills, Steele Canyon and Scripps Ranch), with contests at 9 and 11 a.m.
The consolation schedule is expected to be announced Tuesday’s evening following the conclusion of all pool-play ballgames.
