EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – The Grossmont High girls varsity basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a victory over visiting West Hills.
And now for a pair of seniors, the opportunity that they play for is right in front of them.
Senior MARISSA GILES returned from a two-game absence to lead Grossmont with 16 points in the win over the Wolf Pack
Senior ATHENA SOTELO contributed nine points, seven rebounds, five assists
The duo is in the moment and ready to tackle a San Diego CIF Division II field that is best described as wide-open.
The sixth-seeded Hillers open the playoffs on Tuesday with a home game against Canyon Crest Academy, the 11th-seed.
Junior SARAH HENRY, as much a co-star rather than a part of the supporting cast, added 12 points and six rebounds for the Foothillers.
For Sotelo, she will try to add a second section title to her career. She was a member of the Foothillers’ 2015-16 Division IV championship team.
“It was great to end the regular season with a game of this fashion with having seven of our 12 players score,” Grossmont head coach GRACE CAMPBELL said.
Campbell also skippered that 2016 section title team.
EL CAJON VALLEY 50, VALHALLA 23 – The El Cajon Valley Braves appeared to be in playoff form Friday night in their win over visiting Valhalla.
The Braves shut out the Lady Norsemen in the second quarter to lead 21-7 at halftime.
Sophomore SILVIA ABOUD had a pair of field goals in the first quarter to help the Braves.
Senior NEVEEN QARYAQOOS also had a pair of first-half field goals for El Cajon Valley.
El Cajon Valley will play at St. Joseph’s Academy in the opening round of the San Diego CIF Division IV playoffs on Tuesday at 7.
The Braves (15-10) were the eighth-seed while the Crusaders were seeded ninth, but SJA gets the home game due to its league champion status in the CItrus League.
