EL CAJON – The Valhalla Norsemen clinched their first league title since 1997 with a 70-44 Grossmont Valley League victory over visiting Santana on Tuesday.
It was the tenth-straight victory for the 16th-ranked Norsemen.
Valhalla senior guard DOMANIC
The Norsemen broke the school record with 24 wins and tied the San Diego CIF section record
Valhalla improved to 8-1 in the GVL and 24-3 overall. The Norsemen look to be headed towards the No. 2 seed in the upcoming San Diego CIF Division III playoffs.
The Sultans, meanwhile, face an interesting showdown with Granite Hills on Friday night in Santee.
The two clubs entered the week as the last two teams inside the Division III playoff bubble.
While both clubs could still qualify for the postseason, the winner will have much less of a sweat than the team that loses the season finale.
No scoring information was reported for the Sultans.
HELIX 69, WEST HILLS 51 – The Highlanders improved to 6-1 in the Grossmont Hills League, moving a half-game ahead of the Mount Miguel Matadors and a full game ahead of third-place Steele Canyon.
Junior MAURICE HOLMES scored 21 points for the Helix.
Helix led 18-14 after one period but enjoyed a 19-7 advantage in the second quarter to assume control of the game.
Junior JAHARI HILL added 12 points for the Highlanders, while sophomore KAI JESSIE contributed 10 points.
The Highlanders face a possible one-game showdown for the Grossmont Hills League championship on Friday night at Mount Miguel, providing the Matadors can defeat Steele Canyon on Wednesday evening.
Should the Cougars defeat the Matadors on Wednesday, the Matadors would need a victory over the Highlanders to share the championship with both Steele Canyon and Helix.
Sophomore KYLE DOBYNS and junior JAYDEN MORENO both led West Hills with 13 points.
Sophomore ASHTON
CHRISTIAN 66, LA JOLLA 55 – The Patriots won at home against the Vikings.
Christian High out-scored La Jolla, 18-8, over the first eight minutes and held a 27-22 at halftime.
The Vikings closed the deficit to just 41-38 after three quarters, but the Patriots put the game away in the fourth.
No scoring information was reported.
STEELE CANYON 57, GROSSMONT 49 – The Cougars defeated the visiting Foothillers to remain alive for at least a share of the Grossmont Hills League championship.
No information was reported.
The Cougars will host the Mount Miguel Matadors in a big Grossmont Hills League contest on Wednesday night.
Steele Canyon may need to win that game and have Mount Miguel defeat Helix on Friday in order to qualify for the postseason as a league tri-champion.
Grossmont will need to defeat West Hills on the final night of the season in order to have a chance to qualify for the postseason.
Interestingly, the tri-championship scenario could result in knocking the Foothillers from playoff contention if the Cougars are placed into the bracket as a result of their shared title.
EL CAJON VALLEY 54, EL CAPITAN 50 – The Braves pulled off a big win on the road for their third Grossmont Valley League victory of the season.
No information was reported.
Both teams appear headed to the postseason in Division IV.
LIBERTY CHARTER 58, PREUSS UCSD 43 – DAVID MILLER scored 13 points and JONAH BELPREZ added 12 as the Lions improved to 5-4 in the Summit League and 12-11 overall.
TYLER SNELL knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the second half for Liberty Charter.
