EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – Helix junior MAURICE HOLMES made a game-winning shot at the buzzer and the Highlanders rallied in the fourth quarter to beat host Mount Miguel, 53-51, on Friday night.
Both teams are now 4-1 in the Grossmont Hills League.
Helix led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the Matadors took a 25-18 lead in the second quarter, then led 29-20 at halftime.
The Highlanders closed the gap to 35-29 with under a minute to go in the third quarter, but a pair of buckets helped the Matadors still hold their 10-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
But Helix had a big fourth period.
“I told my guys I will lead us to this win if we put together a good defensive quarter in the fourth,” Holmes said. “KAI (JESSIE) did a great job of playing defense late. He was a big key.
“JADYN (JAMES) did a great job of being a true point guard.”
