EL CAJON – The Santana Sultans and Helix Highlanders girls basketball teams woke up early on Saturday morning to play in the opening game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase at Ryan Athletic Center.
Santana got the fresher start, jumping out to a 20-7 halftime lead.
But Helix awakened in the second half to rally before the Sultans grabbed a 32-30 win between the evenly matched clubs.
Senior AALYIA STONE had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Santana.
Junior BRIANA JERIG added seven points and three steals for the Sultans.
Junior ISIS TAYLOR had four points, six rebounds and four assists for Santana (9-12).
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 56, SWEETWATER 27 – The Foothills Christian Knights were a worthy addition to the tourney schedule.
The Knights started out slow but found a groove midway through the second quarter against Sweetwater, according to head coach JOEY TURK.
Junior ELLIE TURK had another strong game with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Sophomore ARANTXA FONSECA cleaned the glass and controlled the middle with 14 points, 13 rebounds,
Freshman NATALY BRAVO continued her consistent play, contributing 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
“It was a fun game as all of our girls had an opportunity to play and be a part of a fun tournament atmosphere,” Joey Turk said.
GROSSMONT 53, FRANCIS PARKER 33 – The Foothillers hosted the Lancers in a non-league game on Saturday.
