SPRING VALLEY – It’s always darkest before the Dawn.
Monte Vista High senior JADEN DAWN returned from a nine-game absence and helped the Monarchs end a losing streak, beating visiting Granite Hills, 62-58, in overtime.
Dawn knocked down a big three-pointer to wrestle the momentum from the Eagles late in the overtime period.
At halftime, the score was 22-16 in favor of Granite Hills, but the score was tied 49-all at the end of regulation.
The Monarchs were up two late in the fourth when MCKAY ROBERTS tied it to send into OT.
Dawn didn’t just make the big shot, he was a decisive factor late in the game.
With just three points – all coming in the second quarter – heading into the fourth period, Dawn had seven points in the fourth quarter and seven more in overtime, to finish with a team-high 17.
Monarch senior DEMARCUS MCKAN added 16 points and eight rebounds, to go along with four steals. He had six points in the fourth quarter and 14 of his points came in the second half.
Senior DERRICK WILEY also turned in on in the fourth quarter and overtime, with seven of his 12 points coming late in the game.
Wiley also command respect on the boards with 14 caroms, seven on each end.
