SPRING VALLEY – The Mount Miguel Matadors and Monte Vista Monarchs are determined to keep their neighborhood rivalry alive, even if the teams aren’t well-matched this season and currently reside in different leagues within the Grossmont Conference.
The host Matadors scored a 60-38 win over their long-time rival to improve to 15-5 on the season on Wednesday night.
The game was close early, as the Matadors led by just a basket at the end of one quarter.
Monarch senior Derrick Wiley started off hot, scoring the team’s first 10 points, but he had to sit early in the second quarter after picking up his third foul.
It was not meant to be, though. Monte Vista (7-14) had no answers on offense or defense against their cross-town rivals.
In the second and third quarters, Mount Miguel outscored Monte Vista 40-14.
The seniors led the way for the Matadors.
Marquise Edwards had a quiet night by his standards, scoring 21 points for Mount Miguel
