SPRING VALLEY – The Steele Canyon Cougars have quickly emerged challengers for the Grossmont Hills League title.
The Cougars improved to 2-1 in the GHL by rallying the fourth quarter to down visiting Helix, 49-42, on Tuesday evening.
Steele Canyon senior guard GRANT CHILDS scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, as the Cougars outscored the Highlanders, 15-4, in the fourth period.
The score was tied just 17-all at halftime, but the pace quickened drastically in the third quarter, as Helix scored 21 points to the Cougars’ 17.
Helix junior MAURICE HOLMES scored six of his team-high 12 points in the third period, and fellow junior KEISHAWN TRICE knocked down a three-pointer.
But like turning off a faucet, the Scotties went into a fourth-quarter draught.
Junior guard ANTOINE WALKER made like the former three-time NBA all-star of the same name in the second half, scoring all 10 of his points to help the comeback.
Childs and Walker combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Helix junior guard JADYN JAMES finished with eight points, while junior teammate JAHARI HILL added seven points.
The Cougars (4-13), trailing solid league favorite Mount Miguel (3-0) by one-game, will face a huge test on Friday at Grossmont at 6.
Helix (11-9, 1-1) continues its season-long road trip on Friday at West Hills at 7.
