2018 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
East County Sports staff report
CHANDLER, Ariz. (12-22-2018) – The Frontier Classic proved to be anything but a holiday for the San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team, which suffered defeat in all three contests this week.
On Wednesday (Dec. 19), the Hawks fell to 18th-ranked Rocky Mountain College, 52-35. Over the following days, the dropped a 37-point decision to Providence (Mont.), then 55-40 to Montana State-Northern.
San Diego Christian, which opened the season winning six of its first seven contests, has now dropped six straight to fall before the .500 mark to 6-7 overall.
In the opener, the Hawks competed well against the nationally-ranked Bears (9-1), staying within 10 points well into the third period until 1-for-13 shooting from beyond the arc doomed them. Colleen Murphy led SDCC in both points and rebounds with 9 each.
Against Providence, the Hawks again stayed closed for 25 minutes, but the Argonauts out-scored them 22-4 in the fourth period to pull away. Shayleen Toehe paced the Hawks with 15 points, while Hannah Myers8 rebounds.
Game 3 saw the Hawks quickly fall behind to Northern’s Lights, 22-11, then were unable to catch up by shooting just 29 percent from the floor. Toehe and Henriette Gahmig led the Hawks with 9 points each, but Northern (8-6) held a huge 42-28 rebounding advantage.
San Diego Christian next plays at the La Verne University Winter Classic on Dec. -29 meeting Trinity International on Day 1, then the host Leopard, both at “The Tents” (Sports Science and Athletics Pavilion).
