EL CAJON – The Santana Sultans girls varsity basketball team got their first win in a big way on Wednesday.
The Sultans clubbed Chula Vista Learning Community, 55-7, at the El Cajon Valley Tournament.
Senior ANGELINA
“Angelina Madott had a breakout game,” Santana coach JORDAN FRANEY said. “(She) really stepped it up inside and was a big presence for us in the paint.”
Madott entered the game avering just 3.2 points per game.
“I was confident going into this game because we have put in a great amount of work and effort especially playing better teams in the beginning (of the season),” Madott said. “I hope we keep this effort up and keep working as a team because that’s what will get us those wins and even if we don’t win, we can walk out of that gym knowing we tried our best.”
Three Sultans finished with eight points – sophomore EMMA LUNDY, junior LAKIALA AGUININGOC-DAVID
Lundy added seven rebounds, Aguiningoc-David had nine steals and Taylor contributed three rebounds.
Freshman BELLA TERRY had seven points and three blocks for the Sultans.
“I think ALEXIS (MOUA) and Isis did really good work today,” Madott said. “Alexis was awesome on defense she would not let (her) girl go past her. And Isis is always trying her best and putting her full potential into every game she plays.”
It was Santana’s first win in nine starts.
“Super proud of these kids,” Franey said. “I had an opportunity to play everyone and each player stepped up and executed their role responsibilities.
“If we continue making an effort to handle the ball and control the tempo, I think that we will continue to be competitive.”
Santana will meet High Tech Chula Vista today at 5:30 at the tournament.
