2018 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN COLLEGE HAWKS MEN’S BASKETBALL
EastCountySports.com staff report
SANTEE (12-11-2018) – Here’s the no-brainer of the week.
What do you call a person who is a basketball team’s leading scorer, and makes the go-ahead shot in the closing seconds to upset a nationally-ranked opponent?
In the case of San Diego Christian College guard Derek Novsek, you call him the Golden State Athletic Conference male athlete of the week. He was an easy, unanimous selection by GSAC officials.
Novsek tallied 27 points, including the final nine by the Hawks, capped by a pair of tie-breaking foul shots with 11 seconds remaining to defeat No. 2-ranked The Master’s, 82-80, in the conference home opener Saturday (Dec. 8) at Grossmont College.
Plus, the first of the two foul shots by the 90-percent shooter at the line also gave the senior a total of 1,000 points in his Hawks career.
Novsek also grabbed the defensive rebound after the Mustangs missed a shot to force overtime, giving him a double-double with 10 rebounds on the night.
In two games last week, Novsek averaged 24 points and nine rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field.
