CHULA VISTA – The Valhalla Norsemen turned in a knock-down, drag-out defensive effort at the Mariner Melee basketball tournament at Mar Vista High School on Monday.
The Norsemen held the Chula Vista Spartans to just four field goals in a 43-16 win at the event.
Valhalla’s EVAN O’NEILL scored 19 points to out-pace Chula Vista by himself.
The Norsemen are the biggest sleeper in the East County so far but have just two wins in two starts to remain under the radar.
The Norsemen play San Ysidro on Tuesday.
MARANATHA CHRISTIAN 75, SANTANA 73 – Maranatha Christian outlasted the Santana Sultans in Santee in a non-league game on Monday night.
The Eagles jumped out to a 24-15 lead after one quarter.
However, Santana had a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
Maranatha Christian used a 19-15 edge of the final eight minutes to claim the victory.
Santana will host Pacific Ridge on Tuesday.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 82, STEELE CANYON 63 – The Cougars were up against a county top-five opponent in the La Jolla Country Day Torres on Monday night.
Freshman wing MICHAEL GIVENS scored 20 points for Steele Canyon.
The Torreys ran their record to 5-0, while the Cougars fell to 1-5.
The Cougars will host the Lincoln Hornets in a tournament game on Tuesday.
