East County Sports staff report
SAN BERNARDINO (11-19-2018) – Grossmont College has tried to play uptempo basketball, but lost. The Griffins tried a sow-down approach, yet lost.
But when the G-House went to a more traditional game plan Sunday (Nov. 18), things still didn’t work out well, falling to 0-8 on the season following a 91-70 setback to West Los Angeles in a San Bernardino Valley College Tournament consolation contest.
A trio of non-starters led Grossmont in scoring: Marc Cabrera (12 points), Lamon Hudson (11) and former West Hills High guard Marquell Cool (10).
For the Wildcats (formerly the Oilers), freshman forward Derrick Woods dominated inside to tally 25 points on 12-for-14 shooting. Woods, who hails from Nashville, Tenn., also posted nin rebounds and 4 foursteals.
The Griffins return home next Friday (Nov. 30), meeting former conference rival Cerritos in the opening round of the 47th annual Grossmont College Invitational.
Unlike past seasons, Grossmont will open the event with a 3 p.m. tipoff, followed by Moorpark vs. L.A. Southwest at 5 p.m., then 13th-ranked San Diego City vs. College of the Desert at 7 p.m.
