Hornets extend winning streak at Olympians’ expense

FULLERTON – The maligned Fullerton Hornets won their 27th-straight game by defeating visiting Mesa College on Saturday, 45-14, in a National Conference Central Division game.

The Hornets scored by several means, including on defense and special teams.

Fullerton College returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and returned a blocked field goal 75 yards for a score – all in the first quarter.

“Twenty-eight points on non-offensive TDs for (Fullerton),” Mesa head coach GARY WATKINS said. “Playing arguably the best team in the state, you can not make those kinds of mistakes. They made the big plays to break the game open.”

Down 24-0 in the second quarter, Mesa scored its first touchdown when freshman JAKE DUNNINWAY connected with freshman ISAIAH WILLIAMS for a 40-yard score with 8:27 left in the half.

The Olympians cut into the Hornet lead on their next possession when sophomore TYLER TUTT scored on a 28-yard run to make the score  24-14 with 3:25 left in the half.

The deficit seemed reasonable considering the Hornets only had one touchdown drive on offense.

The Hornets scored at 7:32 of the third quarter on a 64-yard touchdown pass.

Fullerton on a return on Saturday.

After a three-and-out, FC returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown.

With one minute left in the third quarter, Fullerton’s Xavion Steele had his second interception return for a touchdown in the game, taking his second one back 86 yards for another score.

The Hornets outscored the Olympians 21-0 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was scoreless.

Mesa freshman DEMURIER PALMER had an interception int in the red zone on the final drive of the first half.

“Our defense played well,” Watkins said. “Surrendering 17 points to their offense, the front seven did a solid job of playing together and making things difficult.”

Dunninway passes for 243 yards, much of the distance was covered by Williams, who had nine catches for 127 yards.

Sophomore DEJON SMITH added five catches for Mesa.

Tutt finished with 87 yards on 16 carries.

“Isaiah Williams made some big plays in the passing game and it was nice Tyler Tutt get going in the run game,” Watkins said.

Fullerton (8-0 overall, 3-0 National Conference Central League) is one win shy of tying the school record for most consecutive wins set during the 1966-1968 seasons.

San Diego Mesa (3-5, 0-3 National Conference Central League) will face Mt. SAC (4-4, 0-3 National Conference Central League) next week at home.

“With Two games left, we are focused on next weekend,” Watkins said.” All we can do is focus on doing what it takes starting tomorrow morning to win that game right now. We want to control what we can control and right now that is being the best team we can be against Mt. SAC.”
