CERRITOS 50, SAN DIEGO MESA 21
EastCountySports.com staff report
NORWALK – The San Diego Mesa Olympians led Cerritos College, 21-21, at halftime, but the Cerritos Falcons had the running game of Rhamondre Stevenson and won the second half, 30-0, in a 50-21 National Central League win.
The San Diego Mesa Olympians couldn’t must much of a running game themselves, moving the ball just a paltry 22 yards on the ground.
Stevenson had 270 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Falcons beat former regional rival Mesa in the teams’ first meeting in 21 years. Cerritos beat the Olympians for the ninth straight time on Saturday night to snap its three-game losing streak.
“Cerritos is a very good football team,” Mesa coach Gary Watkins said. “They have a tough physical running game. They used that to their advantage.”
San Diego Mesa (3-4, 0-2 NCL) took the lead on the last play of the first half when the Olympian special teams blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt, as Hunter Allen picked up the ball and ran 69 yards for a touchdown.
It was a sure boost for Mesa heading into halftime taking the lead.
The Falcons had a 20-7 lead but Mesa answered with a touchdown pass from five yards by quarterback Jake Dunninway to Kevin Levesque.
Cerritos opened the scoring in the second half on a 20-yard interception return. The Falcons also scored on a 15-yard fumble return in the first half.
“We didn’t take care of the football,” “Gave up 14 points on offense, missed tackles and didn’t play well enough to win.”
On Cerritos’ next series, Stevenson rushed up the middle for a 68-yard score
Following an interception by the Falcons, Stevenson picked up a first down on a fourh-and-2, then scored in a run from 30 yards out for his third touchdown of the game, as Cerritos moved ahead by a 43-21 margin.
“I thought the game plans were solid on both sides of the ball,” Watkins said. “I have to do a better job of reinforcing the fact that we can’t beat ourselves, can’t turn the ball over, can’t make mental mistakes and can’t have foolish penalties.”
Mesa will meet powerful Fullerton (7-0, 2-0 NCL), which is undergoing a tumultuous season, next Saturday.
“It’s a one-game season for us every weekend,” Watkins said. “We will continue to learn and be better from it. I have a great group of young men who play their tails off week in and week out. They competed to the final whistle. ”
Cerritos (4-3, 1-1 NCL) will have a conference game against Mt. San Antonio College (4-3, 0-2 NCL).
