Jaguars sack Huskies amid penalties

SOUTHWESTERN 38, EAST L.A. 17
EastCountySports.com staff report
MONTEREY PARK – The Southwestern College Jaguars held East L.A. College scoreless in the first half and defeated the host Huskies, 38-17, on Saturday.
The Jaguars were in control of proceedings for the most part but back-to-back kick off returns may have ignited ELAC’s energy after returning the favor after DEANGELO HOWARD’s 92-yard touchdown.
The Huskies brought their return back 100 yards to keep the score with striking distance at 24-14 with more than eight minutes still to play in the third quarter.
The game “featured” 30 penalties for over 300 yards. By contrast, the teams combined for nearly 350 yards. There were three unsportsmanlike penalties on ELAC for taking their helmet off. Then, the Huskies head coach Bobby Godinez was ejected from the game.
“Had to be the longest game in the history of football,” Southwestern coach ED CARBERRY said. “At one point, we thought we were at the end of the fourth, and it was only the end of the third.”
Southwestern starting quarterback DEMONTE MORRIS passed for two touchdowns – both in the first quarter – and finished off the scoring with a 2-yard quarterback sneak with 7:44 left in the game.
“He’s just going to get better,” Carberry said.
DEANDRE DANIELS had a score when he rushed in from six yards out in just a little after the midway point of the third quarter, extending the Jags’ lead to 17.
Sophomores JESSE LEASAU (Helix) and PADEN HAUZAGA (Mar Vista) caught the touchdowns in the first quarter.
Freshman defensive end NICHOLAS BAILEY, from St. George, Utah, had three sacks for Southwestern.
Freshman defensive back JADARIUS HORTON had an interception and a pass breakup for the Jaguars.
Former Mount Miguel Matador CAM HANSON had four tackles-for-loss for the Jags.
Southwestern forced four five turnovers, including three recovered fumbles.
JAIME MEDINA booted a 38-yard field goal.
Southwestern will have a bye this week.
“We are 4-1 right now and a lot of things have fallen into place,” Carberry said. “First thing you have to do is to become bowl eligible and we ‘re on our way.
“This week we have an opportunity to get everybody healthy and get healthy for Saddleback.”
