RIVERSIDE – San Diego Mesa quarterback JAKE DUNNINWAY put up good numbers against No. 4 Riverside City College on Saturday but the Tigers were seemingly twice as potent in a 45-21 victory at Wheelock Stadium.
Dunninway passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns in the defeat.
Riverside quarterback Stone Smartt had 357 yards of total offense and the Tigers gained 540 yards while holding the Olympians to just 77 yards rushing and recorded four sacks.Freshman
RCC’s Malik Walker scored on a 63-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, running through untouched.
However, Mesa counted the score with an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by a 40-yard pass from Dunninway to DEJON SMITH. It was Smith’s fifth touchdown of the season. He finished with seven receptions for 143 yards.
Mesa’s DOMINIC MCMANUS, out of Ramona High, caught a 10-yard pass from Jake Dunninway to conclude a 99-yard scoring drive. McManus had eight receptions for 81 yards.
The Tigers had 388 yards of offense and a 30-14 lead at halftime, as Smart strung together three passing scores in just over four minutes in the second quarter.
With just under five minutes left in the game, NATANO LOLOGO caught a 3-yard pass from Dunninway.
Freshman ISAIAH WILLIAMS had eight receptions and 96 total yards for the Olympians.
JUSTIN KAPLAN was 3-for-3 on his PATs.
DAMURIER PALMER had an interception for Mesa, while REGGIE PRINCE had 14 solo tackles and a sack.
RCC (1-4), the second-best rushing offense in the state, faces Grossmont on Oct. 13. The Tigers are averaging 48 points a game.
Mesa will host El Camino in two weeks.
