MT. SAN JACINTO 42, GROSSMONT 35
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN JACINTO – The Grossmont College Griffins scored on back-to-back touchdown drives to start the second half and erase a two-score deficit, but the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles regained the lead and held on for a 42-35 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman JAKE SIEGFRIED passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns, nearly leading the Griffins to a comeback win after MSJC jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead.
Grossmont amassed 539 yards of total offense, but that was less than the nearly 600 scrimmage yards put up by the Eagles.
“It was a back-and-forth game that’s for sure,” Grossmont offensive lineman JAY WILLIAMS said. “We’d get a lead but we couldn’t hold them.
“There wasn’t much more than we could’ve done. Jake did more than expected and stepped up. We just keep getting better we produce more than what we did the week before.”
Early on, it was the Eagles with the edge.
Grossmont starting quarterback ANTHONY POSADA was knocked from the game after getting his knee twisted in a pile tackle on the Griffs’ first series.
The game remained scoreless until the Eagles got a touchdown with 4:34 left in the first quarter.
The Griffins tied the game with just over eight minutes to go in the second on a 49-yard drive.
Siegfried threw a 17-yard score to ROMERO-GOMEZ, giving Grossmont a 7-6. lead.
The Eagles scored a pair of touchdowns late in the second quarter, including a one-minute, 17-second drive that covered 98 yards and resulted in the score with just nine seconds left before halftime.
The Griffins’ defense put together their best moments early in the second half.
A pair of quick stops set Grossmont up to take the lead behind passes by Siegfried.
MATHEW LINTON caught a12-yard score to cap an 85-yard drive and RAHNYAE STEPHENS (Valhalla) hauled in a 36-yard scoring strike, giving Grossmont a 21-20 lead with 7:28 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles recovered a fumble and converted it into a score with one minute left in the third quarter to regain the lead by 7 following a two-point conversion pass.
But moments later, on the second play of the fourth quarter, Siegfried, a former Granite Hills Eagle, hooked up for a 48-yard touchdown with former West Hills player TAJ BROOMFIELD, tying the game at 28-all.
“The touchdown was just great vision by Jake,” Broomfield said. “He noticed that I had made safety to freeze up and hit me as soon as I got out of the break.
“Jake is a great QB and he showed his capabilities today.”
Mt. San Jacinto put together a 13-play, 75-yard drive on the next series to regain the lead.
Following an interception by MSJC, the Eagles went up by two touchdowns with a pair of nice gains by Semaj Wren, including a 32-yard TD run.
They hung in there pretty good
“The defense hung in there at times but had some big plays against them at bad times,” Grossmont head coach MIKE JORDAN said.
Grossmont got it back two more times, converting a final score with 25 seconds left in the game on a 6-yard rush by FABIAS SHIPMAN III, but the Eagles recovered the on-side kick.
It was a trial by necessity, of sorts, for Siegfried. He certainly had some green moments, but also displayed his typical poise, leadership, and maybe more importantly, that gun-slinger comeback mentality which he was known for in high school
“(Siegfried) made a few big mistakes but played pretty well in the second half,” Jordan said.
Grossmont running back JARIUS BURNETTE rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries.
“I love my O-line and every time I’m running to Jay’s side it’s 10-plus (yards),” said Burnette, who also caught a pass for 32 yards. “With the guys in the backfield we have, we can’t be stopped. jake started off sluggish but when
“Jake started off sluggish but when he believes in himself, he is a great QB. I see it all the time in practice.”
The Griffins averaged nearly seven yards-per-carry.
“J.B. was out there running as hard as he could,” Williams said. “We ran that ball well. Our offensive line is clicking and our receivers are catching, ”
WILTON CRAVENS had three receptions for 42 yards for the Griffs.
“We were a little shaken at what had happened (to Posada),” Cravens said. “We can always say that fewer turnovers would’ve won us the game, but I feel we played a good game.”
Grossmont College will travel to face Mesa College next Saturday.
“It’s going to be a good game,” Williams said. “Should be fun, I probably won’t be messaging with those guys over there this week.”
