MISSION VIEJO (9-5-2018) – The Grossmont College Lady Griffins stepped into the Saddleback gym with confidence and poise. The Griffins then took out the brooms and cleaned house, winning with a 3-0 sweep of the Gauchos.
Statistically, each match very similar in score; 25-18, 25-16, 25-16, as the Griffins were in control from start-to-finish.
As to no one’s surprise, University of Hawaii transfer freshman SHANEY LIPSCOMB and her partner through three prior games, sophomore and former Granite Hills Eagle ALEXIS VANLANDINGHAM led the way.
“Playing away for the first time was an adjustment, but we walked into the gym and played G-house volleyball and got the win,” said Vanlandingham.
“She plays a huge role on this team as one of our lead attackers. Lexi can play outside and right side but is definitely more confident on the right, said Lipscomb. “She is also one of our hardest workers.”
The tandem have also become good friends off the court.
Lipscomb, as usual, flexed her muscle with 11 kills on 26 attempts, and aced three serves.
Vanlandingham also had a fantastic night with eight kills and had dug out three.
JEN ORBITA also added to the sweep with her own expertise, as she had 12 digs.
The Lady Griffins will continue their conquest to remain undefeated as they will play their second away game at the San Diego Mesa College Classic this weekend, on Friday (Sept. 7) and Saturday (Sept. 8).
“The next two days of games are going to be fun, Vanlandingham said. “We’ve been working hard at practice and I think that as long as we take everything we’ve learned and apply it.”
