2018 COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
SOUTHWESTERN JAGUARS 27, SAN DIEGO MESA 10
EastCountySports.com staff report
CHULA VISTA – It was a big night for both Southwestern head coach ED CARBERRY and San Diego Mesa head coach GARY WATKINS JR. on Saturday night at DeVore Stadium.
Carberry had been through many a grand opening on various levels, but he was still facing the nerves prior to kickoff, especially with the prospect of going up against first-year head coach GARY WATKINS, a Monte Vista High product, and former assistant coach with the Monarchs.
The Jaguars showed no nerves, however, scoring the game’s first three touchdowns en route to a 27-10 victory over the Olympians.
Former Steele Canyon High great THOMAS FISHBURNE passed for 123 yards on 12-of-23 attempts for Southwestern in his first post-high school start.
“(Fishburne) did a good job, he overcame a few things,” Carberry said. “He’s very accurate, but we missed a few in the back in the end zone.”
Fishburne had a 57-yard touchdown pass to PADEN HAZUGA in the second quarter to make it 21-0. Hazuga finished with four receptions.
“I knew that we were going deep and I like the matchup that I had with Paden,” Fishburne said. “I saw pressure coming from the backside so I knew I had to get rid of the ball.
“When I threw it I got hit right away so I didn’t get to see the throw, I was just on the ground waiting to hear the crowd, but it was exciting. It took me back a couple of throws I had to JORDAN ANDERSON whehn we played here for a championship (with Steele Canyon).”
Former Saints rushing star DEANDRE DANIELS, a freshman, rushed for three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter, as Southwestern led 14-0 after one quarter.
“Daniels is a crazy good athlete,” Fishburne said. “DEANGELO HOWARD (three catches) is always making plays, too, and, of course, the O-line did their thing.”
Daniels had touchdowns of 63 (in the first quarter) and 90 yards (in the third quarter). Daniels finished with 178 yards.
“We did not play well enough to win the game,” Watkins said. “Southwestern came out and took the early momentum. We knew coming in that Southwestern could be a formidable opponent and they showed that tonight.”
Last year, Southwestern won on the last play of the game, but this meeting, the Jags seemed in control from the start.
“Offensively, we did not take advantage of the opportunities given to us by our defense and that is on me and me alone,” Watkins said.”
Southwestern recorded three interceptions, as WILL HAVIRD (Grossmont HS), ANGELO TRUJILLO, and DAQUEZ CRAWFORD, had the takeaways.
“Always enjoy the win,” Carberry said. “I saw Daniels run that fast at Saints, but he really didn’t show that burst of speed in our scrimmages, but today he when he hit the secondary, he was gone.”
Southwestern had six sacks, as well.

Former Mount Miguel Matador tackling star CAMERON HANSON had eight stops in the game.
“We came out just aggressive and ready to win,” said former Matador DURAN MILLER, who notched five assists. “Everyone had a mindset to be on point and go into the game like we were the best.”
Mesa’s JUSTIN KAPLAN got the Olympians on the scoreboard with a field goal in the second quarter to break the drought.
MILAN GRICE, the former Rancho Bernardo rushing star had a 1-yard score in the third quarter to bring his team to within 21-10.
Mesa’s ISAIAH WILLIAMS had two sacks, while BRENDAN TORRENCE has a team-high nine tackles.

Mesa’s ANTOINE WARE had six catches for 86 yards, while teammate MATT CAIN hauled in three passes for 42 yards.
Southwestern outgained Mesa, 345-231, but the yardage champs on the night were the officials, who flagged the teams 32 times for 349 yards.
“The penalties did not lead to our demise,” Watkins said. “We must execute better.”
Mesa quarterback TREY COX was knocked from the game after a roughness penalty on Southwestern, which resulted in an ejected player.
Southwestern faces Palomar next.
“They always get good players and have long-time community college coaches,” Carberry said. “They always have a great kicking game.”
