2018 SAN DIEGO STARS BASEBALL
NATIONAL BASEBALL CONGRESS WORLD SERIES
East County Sports staff report
WICHITA, Kan. (7-31-2018) — The San Diego Stars return to the National Baseball Congress World Series will not be an easy one after NBC officials announced that the Stars will meet a recent national champion in their opener.
On Friday (August 3), the Stars will meet the Wellington (Kan.) Heat in the second game of the 84th annual event. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CT (11 PT) from historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
This is the 83rd and final year in the stadium before the City of Wichita decides on remodeling or demolishing the structure. The 2019 event is slated for the ballpark at Wichita State University.
The Heat were NBCWS national champions in 2007 when the ballclub was based Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and known as the Havasu Heat. The franchise was later sold and moved to Wellington, a small town 45 minutes/miles south of Wichita, finishing as national runner-up to the Seattle Studs in 2013.
The Heat leads the series with the Stars, 3-0, all coming in 2008.
The two remaining teams joining the pool with the Stars and Heat are expected to be named shortly.
