POWAY – The top-seeded Liberty Charter Lions suffered an unsuspecting jolt in their quest to reach the San Diego CIF Division V championship game on Friday.
But after a 4-1 loss at the hands of Guajome Park Academy to send them into the elimination bracket, the Lions roared their way into the title contest with a dominating 12-1 win in five innings over new-found rival Bayfront Charter at the Poway Sportsplex.
Liberty, which began its softball program in 2013, will have a rematch with the Frogs, out of Vista, in the quest for its first-ever section softball crown on Friday at 5 p.m. at UC San Diego’s softball complex.
Freshman SYDNEY VIA had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice in the elimination semifinal win over Guajome Park, while junior FAITH VIA had two hits, drove in a pair and also scored two runs for the Lions.
Senior BRITTNEY WATSON drove in two runs for Liberty Charter (18-5) in a six-run first inning after Bayfront put up a run in the top of the first.
Freshman KATIE PEET delivered a complete-game four-hitter for the Lions.
