CIF SAN DIEGO SECTION DIVISION I PLAYOFFS
#9 ESCONDIDO 7, #1 GROSSMONT 3
The Cougars would rally and score runs late to pull away and claim the road victory over the home team Foothillers.
Grossmont scored the first run of the game and take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jordan Brown knocked in Kimmy Bond on a single.
Escondido threatened against the Foothillers with two outs as they hit back-to-back singles and walked to load the bases. However, Samaria Roope would strike out the next batter to end the threat.
Once again the bats came up big for the Foothillers in the bottom of the third as Rainee Foster and Bond each singled, a couple batters later Kati Contreras singled to score Foster and advance Bond to third base, Brown followed with a lined shot to left which brought home Bond to make it 3-0.
Escondido broke through with a run in the top of the fourth when they scored on a passed ball to cut the Foothillers lead 3-1.
The Cougars in the top of the fifth inning broke through again but this time for three runs starting with a Hannah Ice leadoff solo homer. When it was all said and done the Cougars took a 4-3 lead. Later on, they would tack on a couple more runs which included a two-run blast by Rylee Penrod in the top of the seventh inning.
Grossmont in the bottom of the seventh inning could only muster a leadoff single by Katie Appenzeller before the next three batters were retired in order.
Ice on the day for the Cougars went all 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 10 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.
For the Foothillers, Roope went 7 innings in the loss while giving up 7 runs on 10 hits while walking 4 and fanning 11 on the day.
Grossmont with the loss will now take on the Rancho Bernardo Broncos at home on Saturday at 11am.
#3 CARLSBAD 3, #11 PATRICK HENRY 2
A late rally by the Lancers with a run in the bottom of the sixth procured Carlsbad the come from behind victory over the Patriots.
The Patriots knew they were playing with house money and right away they showed it as they scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Savanah Chapman (RUN) reached on an error and would come all the way around to score.
With neither team putting together any type of offense the score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Patriots heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when Carlsbad had a couple of hits which led to scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
However, the lead would only last a short time as Patrick Henry in the top of the sixth would score a run to tie the game at 2-2. With one out Ari Rios (1-3, R) singled, she would score on a single by Lili Pena (1-1, RBI) a couple of batters later in the inning.
Unfortunately, the Lancers didn’t go away as they were able to push what ended up being the go ahead for good third run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
For the Patriots Maddie Simmons went 1-3.
Patrick Henry will now travel to Ramona for a scheduled 2 pm game on Saturday.
