2018 EAST COUNTY PREP TRACK AND FIELD
East County Sports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO (5-12-2018) – At one time, high schools located in the East County were as good as any in the San Diego Section when it came to track and field. Today, just two boys and not a single girl rank as the best in any single event, due to local emphasis on other sports.
Heading into league, and CIF competition, we can only stay focused on David Leber and Dylan Coleman. Both seniors hail from Granite Hills High and both rate highly in field events and not the running events.
Leber tops San Diego and Imperial counties in the discus with a top mark 169-2 according to the most recent standings compiled by http://www.partletonsports.
State-wide, however. his season-best is ranked only 23rd in the state, so advancing to the state meet seemed a possibility.
Meanwhile, Coleman, after specializing in spring as an underclassman, is tied for first locally in the high jump at 6-6. The mark was tops for more than a month before Max Castin of Rancho Bernardo, a 6-foot-5 senior better known for his exploits in basketball.
Both are tied for 12th in the state, yet pale compared to the state-leading mark of 7-3 by an athlete from Mission Viejo-Trabuco Hills in Orange County.
The state meet will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis (just north of Fresno) on June 1-2.
