SAN DIEGO – It took the county’s fifth-ranked team to stop the Christian Patriots’ six-game winning streak on Wednesday.
The Cathedral Catholic Dons’ Nick Nastrini locked into a pitcher’s duel with Christian High senior BRAD JEREMIAH, but the hosts came away with a 2-1 Western League win over the Patriots.
Jeremiah allowed five hits, striking out four and walking one.
The UCLA-bound Nastrini was a nasty as usual, as the ace struck out 13 Christian High batters.
Cathedral moved to 2-0 in the Western League, while the Pats are off to a 1-1 start.
Junior OWEN EASLEY got the Patriots first hit to lead off the third inning.
After a 2-0 Don lead in the second, CHS picked up a run with a promising rally in the fourth.
CONNOR OHTON led off with an infield single, then Jeremiah doubled to center.
Freshman TRENT NIELSEN then walked to load the bases with no outs.
Senior JAKOB BECK followed with a sacrifice fly, but Nastrini cranked up a couple of strikeouts to get out of it still holding a one-run lead.
Cathedral Catholic scored on a triple by Garrett Frechette and a groundout by Zavien Watson in the second inning.
The Patriots host the St. Augustine Saints (1-0 Western) on Friday at 4.
BISHOP’S 4, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 0 – Junior Jared Littlefield pitched a no-hitter against the visiting Knights, facing just one batter over the minimum in a near-perfect performance.
Littlefield hit Knights batter CADE CABRAL with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to allow his first base runner.
Littlefield struck out four Foothills hitters.
BAILEY LEWIS allowed no earned runs over four innings but left the game down 4-0. He struck out three and walked none.
Foothills Christian (8-8) plays a doubleheader at High Tech San Diego on Saturday, starting at 11.
