Easterners short on Wednesday board

EASTLAKE 4, GRANITE HILLS 3

With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sharlize Palacios hit what would be the game winning solo homerun for Eastlake.

The Titans would start things in the bottom of the first when they pushed across a run to lead 1-0 thanks to a single by Palacios. Eastlake would tack on another run in the bottom of the third on a fielder’s choice.

Moving to the top of the fifth inning and trailing 2-0 the Eagles started off with a lead walk by Haley Johnson (1-3, R, 2B), Staci Chambers (2-3, 2B) would follow with a single, Kaylenn Valenzuela into run for Chambers, Amaya Esparza (1-4) hit a ground ball that was misplayed by the Titans which allowed Johnson to score which cut the deficit 2-1.

Following the score by the Eagles, Sydney Huse (1-3, R) continued with a fielder’s choice, a couple batters later Kara Blanchard is hit by a pitch, Brooke Bertussi (1-3, RBI) walked which scored Huse to tie the game 2-2, Erica Simon would come into score on a passed ball to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

That lead would last only briefly as the Titans took advantage of opportunities in the bottom of the fifth with a couple of hits to tie the game at 3-3.

Taking the loss for the Eagles was Chambers who went 6 innings giving up 4 runs of which 3 were earned on 7 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5.

In the win for Eastlake, Sierra Tufts went 4 2/3 innings and gave up 3 runs of which 1 was earned on 3 hits while walking 4 and striking out 4.

 

OTAY RANCH 7, EL CAPITAN 4

The Mustangs held on with some insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to pullout the road victory on Thursday in Lakeside.

The Mustangs would strike first in the top of the first inning with a run to lead 1-0 early on.

El Capitan had an opportunity to get back in the bottom of the second with two outs as Allyson Von Yokes (1-3) singled and Brandy Taylor (2-3, R) singled but unfortunately both would be stranded to end the inning.

Otay Ranch lead by a run in the top of the third inning took advantage of a Vaqueros miscue to score a run and lead 2-0.

The Vaqueros trailing by two runs were able to put together an opportunity as Bailey Olaveson (2-4, R, RBI) hit into a fielder’s choice, Von Yokes would walk, Taylor reached on an error. With the bases loaded Kim Garcia (RBI) was able to score Olaveson as she hit a deep fly ball for the sacrifice and also cut the deficit 2-1.

The Mustangs answered with a couple of runs in the top of the fifth inning on three consecutive hits to take a 4-1 lead.

El Capitan once again answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs as Alexa Williams hit a fly ball to right that was misplayed which allowed Madisyn Wieher (1-4, R, 2B) who led off the inning with a double to score to make it 4-2.

They added another run on a single by Olaveson that scored Williams to pull within 4-3.

Otay Ranch answered as they scored a couple of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead.

For the Vaqueros in the bottom of the sixth inning Taylor led off with a roped double and would score when Olivia Martinez hit a fly ball to right field to make it 7-4. El Capitan would go on to add another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, starting with Katie Collier (2-4, R, 2B) who smashed a double, she would come into score on a laced single to right field by Kylie Mead (1-1, RBI) which made it 7-5.

Taking the loss for the Vaqueros was Williams who went 6 innings, giving up 7 runs of which 5 were earned on 12 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1.

 

FALCON FIESTA TOURNAMENT

TORREY PINES 8, HELIX 5

The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but would eventually trail 7-1 as the Torrey Pines Falcons took advantage of opportunities.

However, trailing late the Highlanders put together a string of opportunities and were able to score some runs to pull within three runs but that is the closest they would get.
