EL CAJON – High school baseball tournaments got into full swing on Tuesday, though only two East County teams, Santana and Granite Hills, rolled up exciting victories.
SANTANA 5, HILLTOP 4 – The county 18th-ranked Sultans won their season-opener in walk-off fashion to take the annual Ron Cooper Memorial Game as part of the Hilltop-Lolita’s Tournament.
Senior LANDON WOOD had two hits and scored a run, while COLE CONTRERAS scored a pair of runs for Satnana.
Senior JOSH ODEWALDT got the win for Santana.
The Sultans will be at El Capitan on Thursday in the next game of the Hilltop-Lolita’s Tournament, starting at 3 p.m.
BONITA VISTA 6, VALHALLA 2 – At the 31st annual Hilltop-Lolita’s Tournament, the Norsemen piled up 10 hits, including two each by senior TANNER SMITH, junior AUSTIN SCRIBNER and sophomore COLE HOWARD, but trailed 6-1 after 3 1/2 innings.
Smith drove in a run, while Howard hits were both doubles.
The Norsemen also stole three bases on the afternoon.
Valhalla will travel to face county fourth-ranked Rancho Bernardo on Thursday at 3 p.m.
OTAY RANCH 6, MONTE VISTA 2 – At the Sweetwater Invitational, the Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, but the Mustangs.
Juinor JON GULLEY and freshman ERNIE ARAMBULA both drove in runs for Monte Vista in the season-opener.
Monte Vista senior DIEGO SANDOVAL reached three times with a base hit and two hit-by-pitch. He also stole a base.
The patient Monarchs drew eight walks.
Monte Vista will host Brawley (0-2) on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Sweetwater Invitational.
CASTLE PARK 7, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 – At the Sweetwater Invitational, Matador senior RUBEN PRECIADO-TEJADA drove in a run to get his team on the board after the Trojans scored in the second-through-sixth innings.
JULIUS HARRIS, AUSTIN ORTIZ, and JOJO CASTILLO each had a hit for Mount Miguel (0-1), which travels to face Hoover on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Sweetwater Classic
DEL NORTE 10, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 0 – At the Sweetwater Invitational, junior JALANI BROWN had two of the Knights’ four hits against the Nighthawks.
Foothills Christian plays at Lincoln (1-0) in the Bully’s Tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m.
MISSION HILLS 14, STEELE CANYON 3 – At the Pirate/Falcon Classic, The county 20th-ranked Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Grizzlies scored two in the third and two in the fourth before going off for 10 runs in the fifth.
Steele Canyon (0-1) plays at Carlsbad in the Pirate/Falcon Classic on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
