EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – The tenth-ranked Mount Miguel Matadors got to the 100-point mark and then some in their San Diego CIF Division 3 playoff victory over visiting San Ysidro on Tuesday night.
In all fairness, the hearty Cougars were coming in off a victory in a play-in game on Monday night in Blythe over Palo Verde Valley.
Still, the division top-seeded Matadors looked primed to make a second-straight run at a section title.
In fact, they looked downright spectacular.
Mount Miguel was up by more than 25 points early in the second quarter.
Despite what looks like an insulting blowout, note that the Matadors put the brakes on in the fourth for the most part after getting to triple-digits.
Last season, the Matadors did some impressive playoff work on the road on the way to a championship-game berth.
This time around, Mount Miguel gets to host its way to a possible title game opportunity.
Five Matadors scored in double figures against San Ysidro.
Rising star DARON TRAYLOR had 20 points, including five three-pointers, for Mount Miguel.
Mount Miguel’s JAMES ALLEN had 18 points.
Senior C.J. JACKSON finished with 18 points for the Matadors. He was particularly dominant down low in the first half with 14 points.
The Matadors’ MARQUISE EDWARDS and MARQUIS NEAL, both had 14 points. Neal had four threes.
Senior MUGABE MILLER contributed nicely, as had three three-pointers in the third quarter for nine points for Mount Miguel. He also looked sharp passing the ball.
Mount Miguel improved to 27-4.
Next up for the Matadors at the Matadome will be San Dieguito Academy (12-17), which defeated Valley Center, 75-57, at home in an 8-9 matchup.
