SPRING VALLEY – While there may have been concern with Monte Vista’s stumble to the finish line of the regular season, know that the Monarchs’ players knew they would be in their comfort zone in the San Diego CIF Division 4 postseason.
Third-seeded Monte Vista battled out of the gate with a sharp-looking Calexico unit early, but the Monarchs’ talent was just too much for the outmatched foes after a close first quarter in a 60-43 win in a first-round game.

The Monarchs were up 32-23 at halftime, then outscored Calexico, 11-5, in the third quarter to start pulling away.
DEMARCUS MCKAN had 17 points and AMIR CONLEY added 15 points for Monte Vista.
McKan had 10 points in the first half.
Conley had 10 points in the second half.
JAIDEN DAWN and McKan were both strong on the boards with 10 each.
DEONDRE MCHAYLE didn’t have to force the issue with this one, as his supporting cast was strong.
McHayle had nine points, including a three-pointer in the opening minutes.
The Monarchs recorded 16 steals as a team and forced 29 turnovers.
Monte Vista will face Guajome Park Academy on Friday at 7 at the Monarchs’ gym.
The sixth-seeded Frogs eliminated El Cajon Valley on Tuesday night, 53-48, and the Braves were one of the teams that upset Monte Vista during its three-game late-season league losing streak.
“We need to get back to work and prepare for Guajome,” Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY said after the contest.
