SAN DIEGO – The Christian High Patriots traveled to Serra High to face off against the the only team in the Eastern League to hand the Patriots a defeat this year.
Both teams were coming in with a 14-8 record on the season.
The Patriots came out on fire, jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter.
A clearly physical game, Serra looked to be no match for the Patriots.
Senior guard Nashom Carter was getting to the basket at will, and the Patriots’ full court press gave Serra fits in the first half.
The Patriots took a 13-point lead going to the locker room on a high.
With the start of the second half, Serra put on a press of their own and caused the Patriots to turn the ball over on multiple possessions.
As the Patriots missed shots, Serra began to heat up on the offensive end and pull closer to the Patriots lead.
Serra held the Patriots to only three points in the third quarter, knotting the score 38-38 heading into the fourth.
Both teams went back and forth in the early part of the quarter with baskets as well as turnovers as Serra clawed closer and closer to the Patriots, eventually taking a 2-point lead with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
Junior forward and league Player of the Year hopeful Jackson Larsen came through in the clutch with a key block and contested baskets at the rim.
The Patriots began to close the game out with some great defense and routine free throws to jump out ahead and beat Serra, 53-48.
Larsen finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds, notching his eighth team player of the game honors this season.
Carter had 12 points, including 6-of-7 from the foul line, along with five assists and three steals, while Isaiah Robinson added 11 points.
Christian West also grabbed 11 rebounds for Christian, which improved to 8-1 in league, ahead of Morse, Serra and Point Loma, in that order.
