EL CAJON – After dropping a home-and-home set with Riverside City College on Thursday and Friday, the Grossmont College Griffins got a three-run home run from former Santana High star TRISTAN SALINAS to erase a 3-0 deficit, then scored single markers in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to down visiting Chaffey, 6-4, on Saturday.
Salinas hit his homer in the third inning, but Chaffey came back to take the lead with a run in the fifth inning.
Another former Sultan, batting right behind Salinas in the lineup on Saturday, REECE HERNANDEZ, broke ope a 4-all tie the bottom of the seventh with a double to left, scoring Salinas.
Impressive in relief for Grossmont was SEAN SZLALAPSKI. He turned in three innings, allowing three hits and two strikeouts.
COLTON CALVERT, another of the Santana contingent, put in a workman-like effort for the win, enduring early runs, but holding on for six innings, striking out six.
On Thursday, the Griffins were recognized for their state championship accomplishment at the San Diego Hall of Champions Salute to the Champions award dinner.
