EL CAJON – The El Cajon Valley Braves turned up the defense in the first half, then came up clutch in the final minutes, and went on to knock off the second-place Monte Vista Monarchs, 40-36, in a Grossmont Valley League game on Friday night.
El Cajon Valley led 9-4 after the first quarter.
The Braves would quickly extend the lead, going up 17-4 early in the second.
El Cajon Valley led 19-6 at halftime.
The Braves still led by double digits entering the fourth, 28-17.
However, the Monarchs would embark on a 12-o to take their first lead of the game.
But the Braves scored seven of the next nine points to regain control, 37-31.
But back came the Monarchs, who pulled to within a point, but the Braves scored the final three points of the game.
El Cajon Valley improved to 12-9 overall and 2-3 in the Grossmont Hills League.
