SPRING VALLEY – Monte Vista senior guard DEONDRE MCHAYLE scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including seven from the foul line, as the Monarchs edged the Sultans, 43-40, in a Grossmont Valley League game on Tuesday evening to stay within one game of first-place after the first round of league play.
McHayle, who knocked down a game-winner against El Capitan on his birthday last Friday night, had 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals, as Monte Vista improved to 3-1 in the GVL.
Monte Vista was up 21-12 at the half after outscoring the Sultans 9-2 in the second quarter.
DERRICK WILEY scored five of his seven points in the second quarter for the Monarchs.
Things in the second half went more of the Monarchs way starting in the third quarter when they were able to push their lead to a 12-point edge after outscoring the Sultans 12-10 in the third quarter.
McKan had eight points, six of them coming in the third quarter which helped bolster the Monarchs’ lead.
Monte Vista led 33-21 after three quarters.
“McKan and Wiley played well,” Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY said. “We have to get better. We need to finish and continue to get better as a team.”
Santana tried to make a furious comeback in the fourth quarter behind NICK BERHALTER, who scored 8 of his 15 points in the quarter and also BRANDON SIMMONS, who scored 5 of his 7 points in the quarter but it wasn’t enough despite outscoring the Monarchs 18-10 in the final quarter.
Also contributing for the Sultans was ANDREW HITCHCOCK, who canned 8 points, which included a couple of treys.
The Monarchs, who improved to 17-7 overall, will host El Cajon Valley on Friday at 7 p.m. as the second-round of league play begins.
Santana (2-2, GVL, 14-10) will be in action next Tuesday when it goes on the road to face those same Braves.

The visiting Vaqueros led 8-7 after one quarter and just 22-21 at halftime against the tough Braves.
