LAKESIDE (1-30-18) – In a contest that could be considered a trap game considering the overall record of the El Capitan Vaqueros, the Santana Sultans couldn’t afford to tie or lose the contest on Tuesday evening.
The Vaqueros who had played both Monte Vista and Valhalla who they lost to in the final minutes very tough looked to knock off the Sultans and make the league race a more interesting one.
Things in the first half were very slow for both squads as they couldn’t get anything going.
So with both offenses grinding the score would be scoreless at the intermission.
However in the second half after a little halftime pep talk from Coach Phillips the Sultans got things in gear.
From the get go in the second half they attacked and finally were able to convert as Garrett DeRosiers found the back of the net for his first goal of the season in the 39th minute to give the Sultans a 1-0 lead.
A couple minutes later with 37 minutes remaining in the contest Colton Snipes banged another shot in for his second goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0.
Santana was able to make the two goal lead hold up as the defense did their job and goal keeper Tim Caravero made 5 saves to preserve the shutout.
Other contributors for the Sultans were Lane Dukes who assisted on a goal. He now has 10 assists on the season.
Another impressive stat for the Sultans is that with DeRosier’s first goal of the season, 11 players for Santana have now scored a goal on the season.
With the win the Sultans go into the big rematch against Valhalla on Thursday on the road at 4:30pm still in first place by a slim lead. They also push their record to 11-4-5 on the season and now have won three games in a row.
